Yoga retreats are short getaways, escapes to Mother Nature for some time, to practice Yoga and rejuvenate your life. It’s a period of withdrawal from the regular distractions and focuses on the enhancement of your inner spirit.
Generally, in the East, Yoga Retreats are places that you can visit and stay for a while like, ‘Ashrams’ and Monasteries, take care of your health and mingle with Nature, besides practising Yoga, of course.
However, in the western countries, Yoga training is provided more as a service to the tourists, who pay for individual or group sessions. No matter what works best for you, Yoga retreats are worth giving some shots now and then.
And, how miraculously they work!
I’ve been on Yoga Retreats often, and each time, I’ve come back with a fulfilled, fresh mind to resume my daily activities.
In the last 10 years, I’ve been to all these places in Bhutan, Maldives, Bahamas, Phuket, and of course, my nation, India, to practise Yoga and meditation.
I’ve lived in monasteries for as long as 2-3 weeks, lived on fruits, veggies and plant protein, practised Yoga with some of the widely respected priests (and Lamas) and enjoyed complete digital detoxification. In this post, I’m going to share a few experiences of my Yoga Retreats in places all around the world.
Well, this is undoubtedly the best place you can be to learn Yoga from experienced Gurus and seasoned Yoga instructors. The Himalayas are the home for such meditative people, who live in ‘Ashrams’ or monasteries to spend their lives in complete detachment from the worldly desires.
You cannot get a better Yoga teacher than them. I lived in an ‘Ashram’ in Uttarakhand for 2 weeks at a stretch, practised Yoga and meditation, met some spiritual Gurus and learned a lot from them. It was a kind of enlightenment on my part.
If you seek calm, quiet and inner peace along with an uninterrupted session of Yoga, Phuket is the place for you. I’ve been there thrice in my life, and I’ve opted for some amazing Yoga programs in the popular studios like The Traditional Ashtanga Yoga Shala, The Mindbody Yoga Studio and Sumalee Yoga Studio.
You’ll find others, as this place is like a treasure trove of Yoga studios, open to tourists and residents alike.
The exotic Buddhist kingdom is a haven for Yoga lovers all over the world. There are so many spiritually enhancing places, where you can learn and practise Yoga here. The Art of Living, Bhutan, is one such place that I visited on my second Yoga Retreat.
I opted for ‘The Happiness Program’, as I was also suffering from an anxiety disorder at that time, and the results were nothing short of a miracle. After one and a half week, I returned from Bhutan to get compliments like, ‘You’ve changed so much’, ‘Your face is glowing’ and more.
I’ve also had some breathtaking experiences in the Maldives, while starting my day with Yoga and meditation, on the beaches, while the sun rose at the horizon, smearing the skies with a scarlet glow.
In the Bahamas, I practised Yoga in the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat, which excels in providing a yogic lifestyle to the people, who are interested to take the plunge. It was a memorable experience, and I wish to go back there again.
I feel that frequent Yoga Retreats help our minds, as well as our bodies, to rejuvenate their inner strength and prepare us to face the struggles and atrocities in the world with renewed energy.
