The Novel Coronavirus has spread like wildfire with multiple fresh cases being recorded every day. What everyone knows is that the virus enters the human body through the nose, eyes and mouth; reason why frequent washing of hands is considered the best way to protect oneself.
Be it the hand-washing guide or healthy eating to enhance immunity; the medical world is abuzz with instructions and ideas to control the rapid spread. That being said, it is basic human instinct to bring certain objects close to the body. We are talking about gadgets – the all-important smartphone and laptop. That’s because these have now become indispensable tools of convenience and ease.
The CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends you regularly disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently. While experts are still second-guessing on how long the novel coronavirus can survive on external surfaces, there hasn’t been any clear answer from any quarter. That is precisely why you should sanitise your gadgets.
Below are a few simple tips that can help:
Unlike other surfaces, the body, and specifically, the screen of your electronic gadgets — laptop, smartphones — are sensitive. Hence, using an alcohol-based cleansing agent can damage the screen permanently. Therefore, you should use disinfectant wipes to clean the screen and body of all your gadgets regularly. It will keep them free of germs and safe for usage.
Using a microfiber cloth is the best option for cleaning your smartphone or laptop’s screen. You can soak the fabric in a little quantity of alcohol-free sanitizer or cleaner, and then use it to clean the screens of your gadgets. It will help in keeping the devices free from viruses and scratches which may otherwise occur if you use any abrasive cloth or material such as towel, napkins, etc.
While it’s crucial to clean the screen of your precious gadgets, it’s equally important to clean the sides and buttons since they can also be the carriers of deadly germs and viruses. While a microfiber cloth is the best bet for cleaning screens, it’s not much effective when it comes to cleaning rough and bumpy surfaces including the edges, buttons, camera aperture, etc.
Therefore, you can use a cotton swab soaked in alcohol-free sanitizer to clean these surfaces. It will help in wiping out the dirt as well as germs and viruses accumulated in the tiny pores.
While you’re giving your best to keep your devices clean and virus-free, make sure to protect the small openings such as the USB port, earphone jack, microphone pores, etc. In case any liquid enters these openings, it can corrupt the operating system of these devices and cause them to malfunction.
Sanitise these areas using UV-C light that breaks down the pathogens, instead of a liquid sanitizer or cleanser.
While it’s common practice to borrow a headset from the person sitting next to you in case you don’t have one, experts strictly advise against it during these times. Irrespective of whether the person is your close friend or a family member, you should not use his/her earphone or ear-buds even for a minute.
He/she could be a potential carrier of the virus, and using his/her earphone can ruin all your efforts at staying safe.
Washing your hands often with soap or an alcohol-based liquid hand-wash is deemed the best solution to remain guarded against the wretched virus. Therefore, ensure that you are washing your hands thoroughly before and after using any device. It will make sure that the virus doesn’t get any transmission route to and from the gadget.
Alternatively, you can wear surgical gloves to avoid direct contact with the devices.
Unless you have exposed your devices to an already-infected individual, you will not need to clean them several times in a day. Just do it once in order to keep them contamination-free. Following these simple measures can go a long way in securing our health.
