Read For Me

I was terrified when I first found out that my brother is suffering from hypertension. The word felt like a deadly disease. The doctor he was consulting gave him a long list of do’s and don’ts. We as a family were quite unaware of what to do and how to deal with the problem.

It was then I took it upon my shoulders to learn more about hypertension and help my brother deal with it. When I first searched about hypertension on the internet, I was shocked to find out that one in five young adults suffer from hypertension. In fact, we as a country are the hub for hypertension patients in the world.

Commonly known as high blood pressure, it is a lifestyle disease that occurs due to physical inactivity or other lifestyle problems. I would like to share what I learned about hypertension so that you should not fear the disease but fight it effectively.

What are blood pressure and hypertension?

We all know that blood passes through our veins all over the body. The amount of force exerted by our blood against the blood vessels is known as blood pressure. It varies according to the load on your heart as well as resistance by the blood vessels.

Hypertension occurs when blood applies more pressure than required against the walls of the vessels. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension is one of the most common ailments around the planet.

Early warning signs for hypertension

We all know how to measure our blood pressure. We can just go to a doctor who can use the BP machine to check the BP rate. The machine used is called a sphygmomanometer or a BP monitor. If you are in a doubt that you are suffering from hypertension, you should daily check your BP rate.

If your BP rate stays higher than 130 over 80 mm-Hg on a regular basis, there are high chances that you might also be suffering from blood pressure. The key here is to check regularly and frequently to get a clear idea. High blood pressure can also be due to a temporary situation like increased physical activity. Don’t take it for chronic disease. But if you are continuously getting a high reading in BP monitor, you should definitely book a doctor’s appointment and consult your doctor about the issue.

If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, you should understand its root cause. In fact, hypertension is categorized on the basis of cause and is of two types.

Hypertension can occur due to any other medical condition or disease. In such a case it is known as secondary hypertension. But if your hypertension is not because of any other medical condition, you are suffering from primary hypertension.

Primary hypertension generally occurs because you might be having a sedentary lifestyle, high-stress level or an increased volume of blood plasma in the body. On the other hand, secondary hypertension can be because of a number of reasons including the following:

  • Diabetes
  • Renal disorders
  • Cancer
  • Cushing syndrome
  • Hyperthyroidism or hyperparathyroidism
  • Pregnancy
  • Insomnia
  • Obesity

For effective treatment of secondary hypertension, you should talk to your doctor about treating the underlying cause. But if you are a patient of primary hypertension, you need a diligent effort and a strategic change in your lifestyle along with required medical attention and drugs.

After I found so much about hypertension, I was able to understand that my brother is suffering from the case of primary hypertension. I suggested him to start exercising and also told him how he needs to stop binging on junk food. In a matter of a year, his blood pressure levels were in control. He still needs regular medicines, but those are mostly preventive and precautionary in nature. If you also feel you are on the brink of danger, you should book a doctor’s appointment, share your concerns and get thoroughly checked up to eliminate any risk associated with hypertension.
