The registration process for your new car is pretty simple and straightforward. To register, you need to take car along with the required documents to your nearest RTO. The process involves physical verification of your vehicle by an inspecting officer.
Upon successful verification, you will a permanent registration number plate within 30 days that you must display on your vehicle all the time. The validity of the number is 15 years from the date of issuance.

Vahan is an integrated portal through which you can carry out your new vehicle registration. Through this portal, not only can you get your new vehicle registered, but also get renewal permits and transfer of ownership, among others. On this site, you can also enter an existing vehicle number and know all its details.
However, note that even if you conduct the registration process online, physical inspection of your vehicle is a must, without which you will not be allotted a permanent registration number.
If your original registration certificate is lost, stolen or misplaced, you need to get a duplicate certificate for the same. To do so first, you need to file an FIR to the nearest police station intimating about the loss or damage of the original certificate. Convey the circumstances under which the original certificate was lost, explicitly mentioning the time and place of loss.
After giving officials the first-hand information about the circumstances under which you have lost the original RC, ensure you get your contact number and address clearly mentioned to get timely information about the proceedings.
Then you need to fill Form 26, which is the duplicate registration certificate. The form is available with all RTOs, and you can even download the same. Take a print out of the form and fill the required details. In case you have taken a loan to finance your vehicle, you need to get a no objection certificate from your financer that it has no-objection in you receiving a duplicate vehicle registration certificate.
After this, you need to take three copies of Form 26 and get them endorsed from the registering authorities in the RTO. Also, you need to submit a valid identity proof, address proof and pollution under control certificate. It’s advisable to get an affidavit on the stamp paper giving details of your car while mentioning that you have lost your original registration certificate.
Submit these documents to the RTO superintendent. After this, you need to visit the Assistant Regional Transport Office to verify and attest your identity proof. Pay the required fees and collect the receipt. Post this, you need to once again visit the RTO superintendent to show the receipt who will verify and sign it.
Finally, collect the acknowledgement slip from the RTO which will mention the tentative date on which you will receive your duplicate registration certificate. The maximum fee for obtaining a duplicate certificate of registration is Rs. 500.
Note that the registration certificate is one of the most essential documents of your vehicle, and in case you have lost it, you need to apply for it immediately. Delaying the process could complicate matters in the long run.
